How to Choose Outfits for your Family Photo Session

The weather clearing up and everything is about to be in bloom (including our allergies) and I am super excited for one of my favorite things... FAMILY SESSIONS! It's about to be the the perfect time to get out in the sunshine and capture your awesome family just romping around and having a great time together. But Kate (you ask) "WHAT DO WE WEAR?!?!". A common question among future family photo models, but fear not. We're here to take all the guess work out of outfitting your family, no matter the size or the the season. Let's dive into some different color schemes, themes, and categories you can frame your outfit choices around.

1. CLASSIC COLOR SCHEMES

Don't be afraid to stop complicating things and choose something easy and comfortable. Jeans paired with a nice neutral top can take the focus off your outfits and put it all on your lovely family. Any family can rock this cool and concise style.

2. BOLD COLORS

If you don't feel like simple jeans and matching tops are your thing, go in the complete opposite directing and throw a pop of color in there! Seasonal neons, mixing and matching colors, or choosing a bold accent color can add a touch of fun to your session.

3. BOLD ACCENTS

If you've got a little one with a BIG personality or a funky style that rings true to your family, don't be afraid to show off your wild side. Distinct touches like matching boots or awesome shades can bring your session style to great new heights.

4. ACCENT THE KIDDOS

A lot of family photos end up being a few large family shots in the beginning and then evolve into half a session dedicated just to the kiddos. If you're planning on making the kids your focus, make sure to pick out (or better yet, let them help choose) some special outfits with patterns and colors that put them in the lime light.

5. MATCH THE KIDDOS

Along the same lines, if you want some incredible "Awwww" moments from friends and family, make sure your kiddos have got some heavy matching going on. Grandma won't be able to contain her excitement at the thought of her grand kids "twinning" together.

6. EVERYONE GET MATCHY-MATCHY!

Want to really tie things together for a cohesive and trendy look AND take away all the stress of choosing everyone garb? Give the fam a directive (i.e. - white shirts and jeans, bright red accent item, black and denim, etc.) and allow everyone to pick their own outfit. This will allow you all to feel happy and comfortable (which makes for WAY better images) and for your photos to feel really put together in an open ended kind of way.

7. OPPOSITES ATTRACT/POWER CLASHING

Contrary to popular belief, mixing patterns and colors does not HAVE to be a bad thing. Be specific about the colors, how they'll tie together, and who is wearing what (i.e. - girls in mint plaid, boys in dark blue). Have a little fun pushing some fashion boundaries while still curating a special look just for your family.

8. SEASONAL COLOR SCHEME

Have you looked around and noticed that every man, woman, and child on the block is wearing a certain color this season? GOOD! That means you've got an easy starting point for your family photo outfits. If you can zero in on the seasons hot color, you'll be able to find options for it everywhere you look, making it easier to create the color palette for your session. (For example, 2017 was the year of deep, rich reds.)

10. WHO CARES!

So, after reading all of that, I want you to remember, there is NOTHING you could wear that could ruin or distract from the beauty and love your family shares for one another. As long as you feel JOY while taking your photos, it really (truly) doesn't matter what you wear. Your family is perfect just the way it is. :)
